DWR PFC Free Water Repellent Finish
That's a mouthful. Let's break it down.
DWR stands for Durable Water Repellency. It's an industry standard term which denotes that the fabric has been coated with a thin film that repels water away from the fabric. Although there is much debate around the terms used to describe the hydrophobic properties of fabrics the basic tiers are:
Lowest Protection: Water Resistant
Moderate Protection: Water Repellent (DWR)
High Protection: Waterproof
PFC stands for Perfluorinated compound. They are a man made chemical that is used in many water resistant and water repellent fabric coatings. They are highly toxic and seep in to the environment during application and fabric use. Due to their highly toxic nature we don't use them.
Materials and Weights
Recycled Ripstop Polyester
All the fabric used in the jacket comes from recycled plastics. Plastic PET containers are collected, washed and chopped in to flakes. Once in flake form they are melted and stretched to create the fabric.
Ripstop fabrics are woven using a special reinforcing technique that makes them more resistant to rips and tears than a traditional fabric!
Recycled Synthetic Insulation
Our insulation undergoes a similar process from recycled plastic to flake form. It's then stretched in to a candy-floss like texture, perfect for trapping air and keep you warm. We use two layers of 40g recycled insulation in our jackets for a total of 80g insulation.
YKK Waterproof Zippers
Zips are some of the areas of trraditional jackets that are most prone to exposure form the elements. On our jacket we have chosen to use YKK Waterpoof Zippers so they are now the area of the jacket most resistant to water!
Cross Hatch Sewing Style
The jackets utilise a cross-hatch, sewn through style of construction. This essentially means the insulation is held in place with the stitching, giving you an even spread of insulation and avoiding cold spots!
